Just needed a bigger hammer to hit the tool with. Bad news, the new one must have been a different length, now the steering wheel isn’t straight. I know you’re supposed to get an alignment anyways, but I literally had one done less than a month ago. They weren’t very clear that it needed a new tie rod though...

This is the tool I used

There’s a shop in town that quoted me $50 for an alignment once, I guess that’s not so bad

$50 seems good. You can’t get one done near me for less than $70.

Just needed a bigger hammer

Congrats, you just prequalified as an ‘80s Toyota master mechanic with that statement. Numerous issues on my Tercels and the pickup were solved with El Hammer.

Time for Harbor Freight and fuckit, doing auto repairs while drunk is more fun.

Congrats! It’s not the length of the tie rod but how far it’s threaded in. That is how the alignment angle “toe” is set, which determines steering wheel position. It also happens to be the main tire wear angle. Getting an alignment after replacing a tie rod is only an option of you don’t care how the car handles or how quickly it wears through tires. Otherwise it’s a requirement.

If it makes you feel any better $70 is pretty cheap. Most places charge over $100.

Well what sucks is I had one done a month ago and now I have to get another one done.

The only positive spin is between the two I’m more or less paying for what one cost most places

Sometimes you just need a bigger hammer.

Hey you could always try to get the shop to do it for free since they should have told you the tie rod end was bad.
